ROUTE TO WELLTH

SWEAT

Growing up in Germany, I was very active and would go to dance classes twice a week, but then I started modelling and had to carve out a fitness routine around travelling. These days, I go running, jump on the trampoline in the garden at my home in LA and do bodyweight exercises – including lots of squats. I get plenty of movement from running around after four children [Helene, 16, Henry, 15, Johan, 14, and Lou, 11], two dogs and a cat.

PREVENT

Now I’m in my forties, I really try to listen to my body. I don’t hammer it so hard when I work out – I don’t want to be complaining about sore knees and a sore back, like some of my friends. I’m fortunate enough to have a pool at home and, when the pandemic started, I began swimming 20 laps a day. Low-impact exercise like this is much better for my joints than running on a treadmill. Hulahooping is a great low-impact option, too – as is all the trampolining I do!

FUEL

While I love a burger and fries, it doesn’t leave me feeling great – nutritious meals energise me both physically and mentally. For breakfast, I’ll have cottage cheese with berries mixed in, or salmon on bread. I’ll have a smoothie every day – made with ice and fruit, such as apple, pineapple and watermelon. I’ve also started making healthy tweaks, like adding wheat berries to dishes and enjoying more plant-based meals.

NOURISH

I have a busy schedule, meaning it can be difficult for me to stay on top of all the components of a nutritious diet – be that fatty acids or antioxidants. To help me get what I need, I take a Perfectil supplement for skin, hair and nails every day. It’s particularly important for me since, in my job, my dyed blonde hair is exposed to a lot of heat styling, and

I’m constantly having new make-up and nail varnish applied. It’s an extra boost on top of my regular eating regime.

CREATE

I’ve relished the opportunity to spend more time at home with my family in recent months. Being on a plane and in the studio a lot less means I’ve been able to enjoy getting stuck into domestic tasks. I’ve also been doing painting in the garden with my kids – I was determined not to lose them down the abyss of the internet. It’s a goal I’m shooting for with myself, too.

RELAX

I’ve started a little vegetable patch in my garden. Seeing the squashes growing has been really fulfilling, and I have fun with the kids making squash muffins. It’s good for them to see healthy meals made from scratch. Cooking generally helps me wind down; I’ll find inspiration for new dishes in my friend Zac Posen’s book Cooking With Zac: Recipes From Rustic To Refined (£30, Rodale Press). I’ll also look on Youtube – that’s how I stumbled upon my new favourite dish: teriyaki tofu.

ADJUST

Getting used to this ‘new normal’ – one in which we can’t see friends so easily, often just online – has been an adjustment. It took some time to get used to having quieter days. For a while, it felt strange that there was no longer this rush in the morning when the kids went to school, and in the afternoon when they came home. The whole rhythm of family life felt off, so I made sure they got out of the house for regular walks.

HYDRATE

People often ask me what miracle serum I’m putting on my face – but I think it’s easy to forget how much of a difference the simple things, like drinking lots of water, make to your skin and hair. If you stay hydrated, you’ll notice a difference. That’s very much my wellness philosophy: what you put inside your body through your diet, and how you exercise, will not only help how you look and boost your self-esteem, it’ll also help you feel good.

GLOW

I’m lucky to be sent amazing beauty products from companies all over the world, but I keep my routine pretty simple. I return to coconut oil time and again to moisturise my hair and skin. I’ve also been using Johnson & Johnson baby shampoo as a gentle facial cleanser. I love using it after a shoot – because it removes false lashes and make-up so effectively – and for taking off sunscreen at the end of make-up-free days at home. I’m also a fan of Dr Hauschka Eye Balm, Charlotte Tilbury Charlotte’s Magic Cream and Mario Badescu Buttermilk Moisturizer. I’ll slather the latter on once a week after using an exfoliator on my body. That really leaves my skin looking fresh and healthy.
