Feeling wiped out after another restless night? You’re not alone. From stressing over work to too many late-night Netflix binges, there are lots of different reasons why you might be struggling to sleep. So we asked the experts for their top tips on how to recharge and re-energise.

WATCH THE CLOCK

Whether you’re a night owl or an early bird, committing to consistent sleeping and waking times that work with your internal body clock is crucial for a deep, restorative snooze. ‘Never lie in for longer than 30 minutes at the weekend,’ advises Dr Kat Lederle, head of sleep health at Somnia. ‘Similarly, if you’ve had an early start, aim to go to bed 30 minutes before you usually turn in that evening to repay the sleep debt.’ EXERCISE EARLIER

Working out late in the day raises your body temperature and your heart rate, which can have a negative effect on your ability to fall asleep. ‘Make sure your final workout of the day finishes at least two hours before bedtime,’ says Dr Lederle.

TAKE A CHILL PILL

Worrying about work, health or money can also be an issue. Ageing expert and Lumity founder Dr Sara Palmer Hussey says: ‘Modern life often leaves us feeling frazzled, with difficulties sleeping.’ Try taking one or two Lumity Restful Nights Booster Supplements at bedtime to help you wind down. These soft-gel capsules contain magnesium and manganese to support the nervous system and restore balance. ‘They’re specifically targeted at the effects of stress and formulated to aid rest and regeneration,’ she explains.

DECLUTTER YOUR MIND

Gazing at your phone, laptop or TV late into the evening can also put your mind in overdrive, so limit screen time before bed. ‘Take mini mind breaks throughout the day,’ advises Dr Lederle. ‘Relaxation techniques such as mindfulness can help you to let go of your thoughts.’

AVOID THE NAP TRAP

However tempting it might be, napping is not the answer if you regularly experience sleep issues. ‘It will only perpetuate the problem,’ explains Dr Lederle. ‘If you generally sleep well, keep naps to 20 minutes and take them before 2pm.’
