When a delay in securing an EU passport scuppered a move across the Atlantic, Argentinian centre-forward Calleri swapped Boca Juniors for a loan spell with Sao Paulo. There was, however, a risk involved as he was trading a consolidated partnership with Carlos Tevez for a step into the unknown, and failure to adapt would make him less attractive to European clubs.
Instead, the move was a resounding success and he responded by becoming the Brazilian side’s top scorer in the 2016 Libertadores with nine goals.
Brave and bright around the penalty box, he is no technical marvel and there is little that is impressive about his combination play, but a move to West Ham looks likely; it will be interesting to see if he has enough to make a consistent impression at a higher level.
