They would cer­tainly have been con­tenders, es­pe­cially if bol­stered by the likes of Scot­land’s Kim Lit­tle and Jess Fishlock of Wales. How­ever, de­spite talk of field­ing a team in Tokyo, foot­ball pol­i­tics is likely to deny them.
