Coming off the bench to win his first cap in the 2-1 victory in Georgia, the 22-year-old Hamburg front man is that rare breed in the Austrian camp these days: a new face confidently gravitating towards centre stage.

In the wake of their dreadful Euro 2016 campaign, the national team undeniably needs an extra dimension and they have the ideal candidate in a player who is comfortable either as target man, number 10 or out wide.

Intelligent, resourceful and levelheaded, “Michi” is the son of Austria’s under-21 coach, Werner Gregoritsch, and has been one to watch for some time, scoring his first goal in professional football for Kapfenberg at 15.

He has been in Germany for four years, playing at Hoffenheim, St Pauli and Bochum prior to moving to Hamburg last year.
