Dynamo Kiev 3 Bayern Munich 3

Kiev open up a big lead and then miss golden opportunity to score a fourth goal before Bayern hit back to reach the Final

-

Coached by that wily old fox Valeriy Lobanovskyi, Dynamo Kiev came tantalisingly close to dumping Bayern Munich out of the Champions League semi-finals before the return leg in Germany had even been played.

Leading 3-1 with an hour gone, Kiev winger Vitaliy Kosovskyi was through one-on-one with only Oliver Kahn to beat. However, despite having plenty of time to place his shot past the Bayern goalkeeper, Kosovskyi opted instead to chip the German – and he could only watch helplessly as his shot sailed agonisingly over the crossbar with 88,000 fans in the old, open Olympic Stadium holding their breath.

Two goals from Andriy Shevchenko had put Kiev on their way before the visitors pulled a goal back through Michael Tarnat on the stroke of half-time. Five minutes after the re-start, Kosovskyi restored the two-goal advantage before he then missed that glorious opportunity to put the result beyond doubt.

Realising they had been let off the hook, Bayern hit back with a curled free-kick from Steffen Effenberg. Playing as a sweeper, Bayern’s Lothar Matthaus then had to clear a header off the line before Carsten Jancker scored the German’s equaliser two minutes from time.

Back home in Bavaria, Bayern offered the Ukrainian side very few chances to grab an away goal and the hosts won 1-0 to go through.

In the Final, Bayern met Manchester United in Barcelona and conceded two late goals themselves, with United scoring twice in injury time to win 2-1.
