REPORTS WE COULDN’T MAKE UP

-

1 GETTING SHIRTY

Schalke winger Rabbi Matondo had to apologise to his club’s fans after being pictured wearing the shirt of their biggest rivals, Borussia Dortmund. The19-year-old says he borrowed the top from pal and Dortmund star Jadon Sancho during a gym session.

“I just want to say how deeply sorry I am to everyone offended and upset by my actions,” offered Matondo, who went on to add: “I am very sad and disappointed in myself for letting everyone associated with Schalke down.”

2 LUKE WHO?

When Carlo Ancelotti was asked for his reaction to defender Luke Garbutt leaving the club after11 years’ service, the confused Everton manager replied: “Who? I’m sorry, I was not expecting this question. I don’t know.”

To be fair to Ancelotti, Garbutt had not made a senior appearance for the club for five years and was on loan at Ipswich Town this season, while the Italian only took over at Goodison Park in December.

Any day of the week… Kane now has over 200 club goals in his career

Former England U21 international Garbutt saw the funny side of it all, and later posted a video of himself in action with the message: “There you go Carlo, look at what your missing @Everton.”

3 TRENT FROM ABOVE

One Nottingham Forest fan made the mistake of celebrating too early during July’s East Midlands grudge match with Derby County. The fan got so carried away celebrating what he thought was a victory for his team, that he missed The Rams’ 97th-minute equaliser – and got himself in deep water.

A tweet from British Transport Police Nottinghamshire read: “Officers attended a report of persons in the canal opposite Nottingham station. A Forest fan had jumped in to celebrate a win over local rivals, unaware of the late equaliser. #wounded.”

4 PLAY JUDE

Borussia Dortmund’s social media team went the extra mile in announcing the signing of Birmingham City teenager Jude Bellingham. When the transfer was made official, the German side released a video of their players, as well as club mascot Emma, singing The Beatles’ anthem, “Hey Jude”. In the days leading up to the announcement, they had also been teasing the signing with posts titled, “A Day In The Life”, “Here Comes The Sun” and “Yesterday”.

5 KANE ABLE TO MAKE HISTORY

With a goal in Tottenham’s 3-1 defeat at Sheffield United in July, Harry Kane became the first player to score a Premier League goal on every day of the week and in every month of the year.
