On the radar

(Trabzonspor)

-

2020 has been a roller-coaster ride for former Chelsea midfielder Newton.

The 48-year-old left Stamford Bridge in February to become Trabzonspor’s assistant coach, but when Huseyin Cimsir was sacked for failing to win the title, he was hired on a caretaker basis. In only his second match, he oversaw a 2-0 win over Alanyaspor in the Turkish Cup final, which landed him the job full-time.

Newton spent eight years at Chelsea after returning as Roberto Di Matteo’s assistant in 2012, but felt ready for a new challenge. He told Sky Sports: “I’ve been trying to become a number one for a while and felt there was more opportunity here. The figures don’t lie – there are very few black managers [in England].”

Trabzonspor are currently serving a one-year ban from Europe for FFP breaches, so Newton will be able to fully focus on domestic success in 2020-21.
