Tenth circumnavigation for Sanders
Jon Sanders, 78, arrived back in Carnarvon, Western Australia on December 20, 2017 to finish his tenth circumnavigation, 14 months after setting out in his Sparkman & Stephens 39, Perie Banou II.
Sanders completed his first solo circumnavigation west to east via the Southern Ocean in 1970. Between 1981 and 1982, he sailed a double nonstop solo circumnavigation, this time west to east via the Southern Ocean. His sailing achievements made international news in March 1988 when after 658 days, 21 hours and 18 minutes at sea, he completed three non-stop solo circumnavigations aboard his 44ft sloop, Parry Endeavour.
Sanders still holds the Guinness Book of Records title for the longest distance ever sailed continuously by any vessel – 71,023nm.
Ocean Cruising Club’s Anne Hammick said he was ‘an inspiration.’
