RUSTLER 36
PRICE £55,000-£150,000 YEAR 1980-2015
The Rustler 36 comes with impressive provenance, being a development of the R31, Kim Holman’s natural extension of the seaworthy Stella, which in turn was a derivative of the legendary Folkboat.
Although there was a standard model when she was launched in 1980, most were custom built to a degree, so rarely were two identical. Yachts of this class were never blessed with a voluminous interior. Though not exactly cramped, you wouldn’t really want more than four on board for a long passage.
A high bridge deck protects the companionway from downflooding and teak handholds make descending the steps easy and safe. Below, the layout is traditional and yet practical. The standard navigation station has a large forward-facing chart table and dedicated instrument console. Directly behind is a quarterberth, the head of which becomes the navigator’s seat. It could sleep two close friends, just, but at just 1.07m/3ft
6in across at the shoulders, it’s a squeeze.
The U-shaped galley opposite is designed for ease of use at sea, with everything placed within reach of a bum-strapped cook and a robust crashbar to prevent them from falling into the cooker. Stowage for provisions is average but well partitioned.
The saloon is functional yet comfortable, with two 1.98m/6ft 6in-long straight settees and lee cloths making good sea berths. Some had canvas pilot berths above while the area behind the seatbacks is ideal for storing bedding.
