Growth in online sailing courses
The RYA has said more people have signed up for its online courses during the coronavirus lockdown.
It has seen an increase in students taking part in its online navigation courses and the RYA Marine Radio Short Range Certificate (SRC).
The RYA’S training resource manager, Craig Burton, said instructors have adapted to the restrictions, using software such as Zoom for teaching.
Students with the Scaramouche Sailing Trust, based at London’s Grieg City Academy, have had to suspend their sailing plans. Instead they have been working on Day Skipper Theory and Essential Navigation and Seamanship via Zoom with Paul Bew of City Sailing.
Trust founder Jon Holt said selfisolation was working well, allowing students to recap in between sessions if concepts were not fully understood. Two of their promising sailors, 15-year-olds Jaydon and Tyler, have been in school, as their parents are key workers, enabling them to continue their tuition remotely (left).
