Les Voiles returns with two-week spectacle
Following a long summer devoid of the sight of yacht racing, Les Voiles de Sainttropez is planning to burst back on the scene from 26 September to 9 October with a new format spread over two weeks.
The regatta has been a glamorous rendezvous for classic and modern yachts at the end of the Mediterranean season since the friendly challenge set by Patrice de Colmont, owner of the famous Club 55, that started it all back in 1981. It will be the first big international sailing event to go ahead after the COVID-19 restrictions imposed this year. As such, it will be a celebration of sailing, and of a return to near normality.
During the first week of racing, the customary programme will be run for yachts up to 20m, while in the second week there will be racing for the socalled Voiles Super Boats, when the larger, faster yachts and big classics will compete on a variety of courses. This will see the type of sailing spectacle which has made Les Voiles famous among spectators, photographers and artists, with yachts such as the incomparable Fife designs and the big schooners vying with each other out on the water, and returning to berth stern-to the quayside of the Vieux Port. An evening promenade along the catwalk of immaculately prepared, historic yachts is a treasure for dedicated boat-spotters.
Plans will be reviewed at the end of July and August to comply with the latest guidance from the French government.
