Removals rules and etiquette due to pandemic

- MCCARTHY’S REMOVALS AND STORAGE, LEEDS

It is no secret that the property industry has seen a boom over recent months as people flocked to move home following the lockdown, encouraged by the Chancellor’s stamp duty holiday.

Understandably, some people are worried about how a move can take place given the current restrictions we are working under. At McCarthy’s we’ve undertaken lots of moves over the last few months and, with the appropriate measures in place, a smooth move is still very much possible.

Of course, rules are changing all the time so there are no guarantees, but we expect moves to be able to continue to take place as an “essential activity”, despite local lockdowns.

So, what should you expect if you’re planning a move in the coming months, and what advice can we offer?

■ Plan ahead. There is increased demand for removals services currently so get in touch as soon as you know you’re moving, even if a date isn’t yet agreed.

■ Nice to “virtually” meet you. For most customers we are now doing a video survey. Given most of us have spent the last few months getting to grip with Zoom and other video apps, it’s really no different. You show us round your home and we can both ask the questions we need. From that we can provide an accurate quote for the work involved.

■ Packing. We can still offer our packing service, but with extra levels of hygiene in place. We ask customers to ensure everything is as clean as possible before we arrive and we ensure our team members, vehicles and equipment are properly sanitised. If you are packing your belongings yourself we ask that all packing is completed before the removal team arrive, and that everything has the room it needs to end up in clearly labelled.

■ Private facilities. If at all possible we ask that our team are provided with their own toilet and sink area to minimise contact. But if that’s not possible, consider getting some disposable paper towels rather than sharing towels.

■ Social distancing. You show the team around the house when they arrive, and then we ask your family and pets to remain in one room while the removal experts do their thing. That room is then the last to be emptied.

■ Ventilation and cleaning. If it’s not too cold or wet, open the windows and doors in the house to ensure adequate ventilation. When cleaning before we arrive pay particular attention to high touch areas such as door handles, light switches and taps.

■ Health checks. Our crews sign in confirming that they have no symptoms and we do daily temperature checks. If you find yourself having to be in self isolation over the period you are supposed to move, we would unfortunately be unable to move you. We recommend everyone considers taking out insurance in case of any unforeseen circumstances.

■ Minimise interactions. Our teams are a friendly bunch and normally love a good chat, but we’re trying to minimise interactions at the moment. Similarly, don’t worry about refreshments, the team will be fully prepared!

■ No paperwork. We won’t ask you to sign any paperwork on the day. Any notes or inventories will be emailed to you after the move.

■ Storage. If you require storage as part of your move, that’s still available and we can keep hold of your items for as long as needed. They’ll be secure in storage rooms, untouched and unopened, until they’re delivered back to you, ensuring their safety.
