Best knownwn for: Pre­sent­ing DIY SOS. Early life: Born Ni­cholas Si­mon Augustine Knowles on Septem­ber 21,1, 1962 in Southall,hall, Lon­don. He has a brother and three sis­ters.sis­ters At 11 he and his fam­ily moved to Milden­hall in Suf­folk and stud­ied at St Louis Mid­dle school. They later moved again, this time to Tun­bridge Wells, Kent. He be­came a labourer be­fore start­ing his own busi­ness. Pas­sion­ate about mu­sic, he played in as­sorted bands be­fore team­ing up with his brother to per­form in bars and clubs in Lon­don and the Mid­lands. Ca­reer: Knowles’s TV ca­reer started at the BBC in Lon­don in the Doc­u­men­tary Fea­tures depart­ment. He worked in news in Phoenix, Ari­zona, be­fore re­turn­ing to the UK and ITV’s TVS news­room in Maid­stone. He honed his skills as a re­porter, pro­ducer and di­rec­tor be­fore go­ing in front of the cam­era as a pre­sen­ter on sex ad­vice show Con­fi­den­tial. Other shows have in­cluded TVWeekly, En­ter­tain­ment To­day and Put ItToTheTest. Since 1999 he has fronted BBC One’s DIY SOS, and also worked on To theEnd­softhe Earth,Per­fec­tion and Guesstimation. His latest pro­ject is TheNa­tional Lottery:FiveS­tarFam­i­lyRe­u­nion. Trivia: In 2007 it was re­vealed Knowles was suf­fer­ing from tu­ber­cu­lo­sis, which he be­lieves he con­tracted while film­ing for Comic Re­lief in Zam­bia. Quote: “I have never wanted to be as­so­ci­ated with one kind of pro­gramme – it’s im­por­tant to chal­lenge your­self and make sure you are not pi­geon holed.”
