Top chefs’ new Yorkshire venture
After highly successful spells in some prestigious kitchens – the Langham in London and Grand Hotel Quellenhof in Switzerland among others – chef Bernd Wolf has now brought his awardwinning skills to Yorkshire.
Grand Cru, which has beautifully transformed a Victorian former Co-Op building in Birkenshaw, near Bradford, is actually a joint effort, both in the kitchen and as a wider venture, between Bernd and wife Sharon.
The traditional stone-built exterior gives way to a stunning interior, created by local architects, designers and craftspeople and providing a fitting setting for a memorable fine dining experience, based upon the influences and ideas Bernd and Sharon have absorbed from kitchens across Europe.
Innovatively-prepared and cooked food, using the best of Yorkshire produce, goes to create menus where seasonality is an important factor and new ideas are adopted with enthusiasm and flair.
The ultimate exploration of the Grand Cru philosophy is provided by the tasting menu, priced at £55 a head, although it is also possible to sample the kitchen’s creativity for a more modest £15.95 (two courses) or £19.95 (three courses) at lunchtimes, Tuesdays to Saturdays.
Alternatively, select from the extensive a la carte menu on Tuesday to Saturday evenings, or enjoy a Sunday lunch featuring a choice of traditional or more unusual options.
Having only opened last summer, Grand Cru is carving out an excellent reputation as word spreads of the superb food and setting it offers.
