Through good times and bad, for more than 150 years, Huddersfield family company Bower & Child Ltd has been a trusted supplier of range cookers and wood burning stoves.
As the current situation highlights the strengths and vulnerabilities of small, local businesses, the new custodians of this long-established institution are eager to reaffirm the values which have underpinned it since it was established back in 1870.
“Above all, we are a business which believes in providing a bespoke, personal service,” said new owner, Mike Downes.
“For us, good customer service is not about having a big online presence but about understanding how each of our customers lives, eats and how our products best fit them and their lifestyle.
“Once we understand this, we are better able to suggest the products that will serve them well over many years.”
A major strength is in the experience of the team. “Some members have been with the company for more than 30 years,” said Mike. “This gives them an unrivalled depth of product knowledge.”
Although the company was one of the first in Yorkshire to supply Aga cookers, more recent diversification has seen the offer expand to include some quality
European brands such as Lacanche and Ilve but they also remain advocates for ‘Buy British’, supplying Esse, Falcon, Rayburn and Aga, all of which are made in Britain.
“Times are difficult at the moment,” said Mike. “However, everyone is in this together and, once things return to normal, we trust that the principles which have served the business well in the past will help us in the future.”
