Bright ideas

- With Sharon Dale

The bathroom is often the smallest and the least exciting room in the house. Mine is especially dull. The bath, sink and loo are standard white. The walls are painted off-white with inoffensive floor tiles in various shades of brown. My decision to make it more interesting came via the “Good Clean Fun” bath mat from Made.com, which features on this page as this weekend’s style buy. It won’t quite match my bathroom but I’m now hunting for one that will. In the running is a £9 mat featuring a splendid giraffe from George Home at Asda. Here are some more cost-effective, bathroom update ideas:

Towels: Gorgeous, good quality towels can add colour and interest. Christy towels are made in England and there is a great choice, including the striped towels, pictured, which start at £12. Taps: It’s amazing what a stylish new tap can do for a sink/bath. Vola is a Danish company that designs exquisite taps that will probably last a lifetime. For something different, my favourites are from Leeds-based company Dowsing & Reynolds. It has a store in the Victoria Quarter in Leeds and trades online. The Kagera colour pop taps come in green and pink and also in black and white. They start at £129.99 each. www.downsingandreynolds Shower curtains: There is an endless choice but opt for quality as the cheaper ones often look cheap. Rockett St George has a fabulous black shower curtain with a floral pattern. It is £52, www.rockettstgeorge.co.uk Accessories: Get rid of the plastic bottles of bubble bath and shower gel and the plastic soap dispensers. Instead, buy something more attractive and refill it at an ecofriendly refilling station. There is one at BoGrove at 53 Grove Road in Harrogate and on Harrogate Road, Chapel Allerton.
