Bright ideas

- With Sharon Dale

Many of us are sensitive to noise and, thanks to an increasing number of gadgets and white goods, it is getting louder in our homes.

Experts have found that this can lead to stress, sleep disturbance and increased risk of hypertension, which is why we should all be thankful for Quiet Mark.

It was founded eight years ago by Gloria Elliott and her daughter Poppy Szkiler after many public complaints received by the Noise Abatement Society’s national helpline concerning the excessive racket made by household tools, appliances and technology.

These include washing machines, dishwashers, fridges, hairdryers, fans, lawnmowers and hedge trimmers, which in some cases can produce noises loud enough to cause hearing problems over time.

Quiet Mark now runs acoustic tests on a range of products and the best are given a Quiet Mark award for use of low-noise technology or sound insulation.

Look out for it on labels and in product descriptions and check the Quiet Mark website for a list of items that have passed its test.

Lakeland’s personal blender has a Quiet Mark Award and there are at least 22 washing machines that are less noisy than most.
