D E L I K E E N TO D E L I V E R FOR FEMALE OFFENDERS

- With Amanda Wragg

A deli with a difference has just opened in York. Despite the restrictions of Covid-19, the Larder Club threw its doors open last month, offering the likes of antipasti platters, speciality coffee and authentic gelato. The space has been adapted to ensure guests are welcome inside or out for a full sit-down service whilst strictly adhering to government guidance. Chuck a brick in York and you’ll hit a good cafe – so why is this place so special?

Working alongside HMP Askham Grange, the Larder Club is focused on supporting the rehabilitation of women offenders by funding work placements, employment opportunities and barista skills training.

The idea behind the social enterprise came from Laura Gallery whose background in law, charity work and safeguarding brought her into contact with some of the most vulnerable individuals within our society.

“I feel passionately about empowering women to change their lives for the better,” says Laura. “I love what Yorkshire as a county has to offer but I am also in love with Italy, where I’ve spent some brilliant times enjoying great coffee, wine and fantastic food. I want to offer our customers a great experience enjoying a taste of Italy whilst helping a cause that is close to my heart. The Larder Club not only aims to increase employment prospects for the women we work with but to also build confidence and pride within a space where every person can be valued as the individual they are.”

It is sourcing from some of our top suppliers, including Haxby Bakehouse, Lishman’s of Ilkley and North Star Coffee Roasters, so do swing by and have a good lunch and at the same time support this worthwhile cause.

The Larder Club, 3 Blake Street, York YO1 8QJ is open 8am to 6pm, Tuesday-Saturday, 01904 656100, www.thelarderclub.com
