BLOOMING BULBS

-

We’re in September, which means autumn is officially here – if you can believe it – and it’s certainly been a year like no other. But like ourselves, our gardens need routine, and autumn is considered the natural time for gardening – the soil is still warm so it’s the perfect time to add shrubs, trees and plants to your garden.

But one of our favourite jobs in the gardening calendar has to be planting spring bulbs. It’s been an unusual gardening year so looking ahead to 2021, when these marvels of nature will produce spring colour, has got to be a good thing!

But with so many bulb varieties to choose from, the team at Tong Garden Centre have picked out a few that are certain to wow.

English-grown bluebells are a favourite of many. So easy to grow and quick to spread, you can recreate your very own woodland look with a carpet of magical blue flowers.

New to Tong for 2020, the Tulip Flaming Flag are a must have this year. Strong, sturdy and striking, their long lasting, ivory-white blossoms feel most at home when planted in a raised bed or a mixed border.

Phil, our gardening expert, knows all about bulbs.

His favourite, the Iris Katherine Hodgkin, makes an appearance in his garden every year. An incredibly beautiful flower, it boasts large pale blue blooms with intricate deep blue veins and a distinctive scent.

To create a continuous burst of colour that lasts all spring, try underplanting your bulbs. Planting combinations in layers within a container will give you a succession of different flowers.

And we’d always recommend mixing in Westland’s bulb planting compost. Check out our extensive range of spring bulbs in store now. For more information about underplanting and top tips on bulb planting and colourful combinations, visit www.tonggardencentre.co.uk
