On the grapevine
Best for Burgundy: Congratulations to House of Townend which has been named Burgundy specialist of 2020 in the Decanter Retailer awards. With an extensive list, from straightforward Bourgogne Rouge to small-estate, top-flight gems, it offers a mouth-watering selection of fabulous wines. House of Townend also has a temperature-controlled warehouse, so that you can keep your wines in ideal condition while they mature to perfection. “We are delighted with this award,” says John Townend, inset. “We spend a lot of time getting our selection of Burgundies just right and are delighted to have been recognised for it.”
Best for organic: If you like your wines produced to organic and biodynamic standards head to Buon Vino, which has just been named as Decanter’s organic and biodynamic specialist of the year. This small business in Austwick, near Settle, has become a beacon for quality natural wines made to exacting international standards. Buon Vino’s list is full of wines made by artisans, farmers and creative producers. It doesn’t have any mass brands made in vast factories. This is a world of discovery, but not necessarily at a huge price. Try Elgin Ridge 282 Sauvignon Blanc 2016 for its distinctive fresh, creamy, green apples flavours, £13.95.
Best supermarket: More of a fabulous grocer than a supermarket, Booths has been named as Decanter’s supermarket of the year. With just three stores in Yorkshire – Settle, Ilkley and Ripon – Booths has the kind of selection that encourages you to discover new wines and regions without damaging the budget. Wine Buyer Victoria Anderson has sourced a wide and varied range of wines of uncompromising quality that offer great tastes at excellent prices. All Booths stores are well worth a detour.
