On the grapevine

-

Frost devastates France: If you had been in Burgundy, Chablis or even the south of France a couple of weeks ago, you would have seen the hillsides lit up like it was carnival time. Rows and rows of lights, known as “smudge pots”, inset, were lit in vineyards to keep the frost off the vines. They create a layer of warm air that circulates around the vines, preventing cold air descending. In France new shoots had just emerged and frost can kill them in just an hour. Some vignerons are reporting that they have lost 50 per cent of their potential crop. Sometimes it is tough being a farmer.

Open again: After months of restricted opening, many wine shops are opening up. Naturally, selfdistancing rules still apply and you will need your mask – probably for a long while yet, and you will generally not be allowed to touch the bottles, only look, then buy. Buon

Vino in Settle is open Wednesdays to Sundays, if you fancy trying some of its extensive list of organic and biodynamic wines. If you are new to all things natural and organic, go for the Circumstance range from South Africa’s Waterkloof. The Circumstance Cabernet Sauvignon (£15.95) is dark and rich but try also the Cabernet Franc (£15.95) which has lifted leafy notes among its red fruits and green pepper notes. Waterkloof even uses horses in the vineyard to avoid compacting the soil.

Still delivering: Even though shops are opening up again, many retailers are continuing with their delivery service. Yorkshire Vintners in Ripon (01756 601701) is now open Monday to Friday, but will still deliver free within Yorkshire. Ring them for the special code to get free delivery. Chez Vin in Otley has also opened, but the delivery schedule continues. Sign up for the weekly emails which tell you when the van is in your area. Email davidchezvin@aol.com
