Dear Style Clinic

I am looking for summer hats that are both on-trend and practical, something for holidays, everyday wear and maybe also something a little bit smarter, for a wedding. What do you suggest?

Hats are really taking off for this summer, probably because they offer an easy and instant wardrobe update, making it look as if you have made the extra effort and have your finger directly on the pulse of fashion.

That’s the theory, anyway. Choose the wrong hat with the wrong outfit and Worzel Gummidge might be the first face you think of when you catch yourself in a mirror. Or is that just me?

Play it safe for everyday, holidays and semi-smart events with a Panama hat – this white style by Christys London for the White Company is a brilliant goanywhere accessory. It is woven in Ecuador from traditional toquilla palm leaves and finished with a soft grey grosgrain ribbon and it will look as cool with a trouser suit as it will with a boho maxi or a smart shift or your jeans or on the beach. Brilliant, in fact, for races, weddings and garden parties, too.

For a more off-duty touch, go for a bucket hat, like the Accessorize one here, ideal for festivals and beach days and made in eco-friendly cotton. Surprisingly flattering, as long as you don’t go for one that is too small (an all-round brim that frames the face generously will always look flattering).

Finally, this John Lewis adjustable raffia hat is also universally flattering, with its wide downturned brim and natty bow. Plus it gives excellent sun protection and, pulled low, is a great choice for anyone wishing to remain incognito. You never know.
