9. Newby Hall and Gardens
Originally built in the 1690s by Sir Christopher Wren, the interior is an exceptional example of 18th Century decoration.
It also has ties to the hit TV series Downton Abbey with Lord Grantham being the name of Newby’s owner in the 1800s and although the series was filmed at Highclere Castle the setting was in
Ripon and its surrounds, four miles from the Hall.
The gardens at Newby were primarily created in the early 1920s, evolving over the years and include the spectacular double herbaceous border. There is lots for the family to do with an adventure playground and river boat trips.
