Pub of the week

THE OLD BLACK BULL, RASKELF

- With Elaine Lemm

I last reviewed the Black Bull in Raskelf in 2015 and mentioned, even though I liked the pub, that I would never take my mother-in-law there; the banter around the bar made even me blush. There have been a lot of changes since then, under new owners Kevin and Kate Hannah.

The hanging baskets and flower tubs outside are magnificent, and inside, all three rooms radiating from the central bar are spotless. A sign boasting a review saying this is “quite possibly the happiest landlord we have ever met” did make me laugh as the greeting we received from Kevin was indeed very cheery.

The pub puts an emphasis on dining, but it is also clear that those just after a drink are more than welcome. There’s a very well-stocked bar, and the pumps offer “a cracking pint of Landlord,” according to my husband. Theakstons Best Bitter, John Smiths and Hambleton Blond are also available as well as regular choice of rotating guest ales.

The food menu has a range of lovely pub dishes, and Kevin recommends booking at the weekend. I can’t resist a large plate of freshly cooked fish and chips and my other half goes for a rather imposing Ploughman’s.

The Bull has been around since the 16th century and will have seen some life for sure. Now in new hands, it looks like it will be around for a while yet. Who knows, I may even take my mother-in-law next time.
