Style clinic

- With Stephanie Smith

Dear Style Clinic,

I have recently been finding that my eyes are becoming very sensitive to some make-up products, which means they water and itch. What do you suggest?

I too have trouble with some products, which is annoying because I need eye make-up to look as if I actually have eyes. However, before suggesting what works for me, I would first suggest you check that your eye products are not too old – that is, used regularly for more than six months – and also try to establish that you are not sensitive to perhaps your foundation or skincare products. I find some creams containing SPF get into my eyes via my glasses when I am working, causing stinging and watering, so I have to wash it all off (not good just before a Zoom).

I like to use waterproof eyeliners and mascaras to define my eyes. Sisley’s Phyto-Khol Star is very effective and feels comfortable, even applied in the water line, made with rosehip oil and vitamin E acetate which is ideal for sensitive, delicate skin and stands up to rain, heat, tears and sweat (to be fair, my yoga sessions are not overly strenuous).

Urban Decay’s 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencils also do a great job and come in lots of standard and striking colours. They are long-lasting with soothing, moisturising ingredients including jojoba oil, vitamin E and cottonseed oil.

Finally, Illamasqua’s Waterproof Mascara has a blend of oils and waxes to define and lengthen lashes without feeling sticky or flaky, and it stays on well, so definitely worth a whirl for a finish with a non-itchy flourish.
