Pub of the week
THE TIGER INN, CONEYTHORPE
The Tiger Inn is set in the conservation village of Coneythorpe, a sharp right turn on the A59 towards Harrogate just a few moments from the A1.
Unfortunately, the inn suffered a devastating fire in November 2020. Despite having had the heart of it ripped out, after much work and renovation, the much-loved pub has recently reopened. It is hard to see any difference, except that everything looks somewhat shinier.
On a Wednesday lunchtime, the place is remarkably busy, busy with food, and though there is one large table not laid for lunch, it is without any drinkers. It is true to say, this is very much a food-led pub, but as I have reaffirmed, drinkers are very welcome, and there’s a handsome bar to sit at if all the tables are busy.
There’s Timothy Taylors Landlord and Theakstons Best Bitter on cask, draught lagers and ciders, a good range of reds, whites and rosés, with all by the glass and bottle, I am pleased to say.
If you are heading here to eat you are in good hands; there’s a comprehensive two or three-course menu that, though not overwhelmed with vegetarian options, will keep everyone else happy. There are also humongous tasty sandwiches served with chips and a spot of salad at lunchtime.
On a cold day, the inn felt cosy and warm and everywhere was spotlessly clean. The welcome at the bar on arrival was less than effusive; a simple hello would have gone a long way, but it didn’t stop us enjoying the place, and it is great to see it up and running again.
