On the grapevine

-

Quarter off: Head to Asda for some great deals on wine when you buy any six bottles over £5. Asda always has some terrific bargains but now it is worth stocking up for summer. Check out the Extra Special range, such as Albariño (usually £8.50), with its peachy, tangerine and apricot flavours. Or try the Extra Special Malbec (usually £7) for its dark fruit and spice that are just perfect with sausages straight off the barbecue. On deals like this you are always better off trading up rather than just pocketing the saving. This offer ends on April 18.

A taste of Argentina: There will be a tasting of wines from Argentina, hosted by Laurie Webster, from Ucopia

Wines, on Tuesday at Martinez in Ilkley. On taste will be a sparkling wine from the Uco Valley, Torrontés from ace winemaker Susana Balbo, a Pinot Noir from Patagonia, Bonarda from Vista Flores, Garnacha from Perdriel and a singlevineyard Malbec from Benegas, one of my favourite producers. Tickets cost £15, email chris@martinez.co.uk or ring 01943 600000.

Long way from Burgundy:

Kumeu Estate on the outskirts of Auckland is astonishing in two ways. The first is that it still exists, as Auckland tries to swallow it up.

The second is that it makes seriously good Chardonnay that can challenge Burgundy any day of the week.

Wines are made by Master of Wine Michael Brajkovich and there is a restraint, elegance and crunchy minerality. Bon Coeur (01325 776446) has stocks of the 2020 Chardonnay, which has crisp Golden Delicious apple notes with nectarine and a hint of smoke. At £22.99, this is drinking well now but will be happy to age for another year or so. Step up to the single vineyards, Coddington 2019 (£30.99) and Mate’s 2018 (£42). Pour them blind and let your guests tell you which Burgundian slope they think they come from.
