Style clinic
Dear Style Clinic,
Now that I have started going out to more work meetings and events, I would like to update my wardrobe easily with comfortable but smart(ish) clothes. Can you help?
During lockdown, I developed a habit of wearing leggings and an old T-shirt or jumper, every day, and then reaching from my desk to my wardrobe to throw on a collared dress or blouse minutes before a Zoom meeting.
I still do it, but it does not work so well outside of my house, now there is more venturing outside.
I cannot imagine that I will ever wear any sort of formal suiting or tailoring again, but I have been thinking about how to update my wardrobe with a view to the fact that other people, outside of my household, will see what I am wearing.
So, first of all, I am looking for a smart blouse with puff sleeves, like the one here from M&S. Puff sleeves are flattering and on-trend, not least thanks to Bridgerton, and this will work as well with jeans and crop trousers as it will with a skirt.
Talking of skirts, I seem to have buried all mine somewhere, so this asymmetric pleated skirt from Hope Fashion will make a sound investment. It’s relaxed enough for a denim jacket and flats, but dressy enough also for heels, simple top, smart jacket and clutch bag – a look that will take me to the swishest of occasions, if I get invited to any.
Finally, a bold and bright statement necklace is always the easiest way to glam up any outfit, and this one from Mulberry is exactly what I am after.
It’s time to get out there.
POST-ZOOM: From top, chain link necklace, £305, at Mulberry; puff-sleeve blouse, £25, Per Una at Marks & Spencer; asymmetric pleat skirt, £135, from Hope Fashion.
