On the grapevine
Pudding wines: If there is a half-empty bottle of port sitting in a cupboard, left over from Christmas, now is the time to liberate it. Taste it first, to make sure that oxygen has not destroyed its flavours, and then maybe pour it alongside a chocolate pudding. Alternatively, if you plan to pour the leftovers into the gravy, head to the Co-op, which has Taylor’s Select Reserve Port down from £10.75 to £7.75 until April 26. It is perfect with all things chocolatey and will accompany a plate of cheese too. Or you could opt for Morrisons’ award-winning The Best Pedro Ximénez at just £5.50 for a half bottle. It is wonderful poured alongside ice-cream and chocolate sauce.
Bingley sipping society:
Martinez Wines in Bingley will hold a tasting of French wines on Tuesday with speaker Linda Davies. This is an informal tasting group and is great fun. Tickets cost £15 – call 01724 565000 for details.
Wine cellar beware: We are all acquainted with Infinity swimming pools, but I was puzzled by the Infinite wine cellar apparently in one of the superyachts seized in London.
Whether it is surrounded by mirrors so that it appears that the bottles go on forever, or maybe it is automatically restocked as wine is drunk, it is likely that we will never know. I wonder whether the yacht will still have its full stock of wine when it is eventually given back or sold.
Asda price drop: This is the last few days of the Asda offer which gives 25 per cent off a wide selection of wines when you buy any six bottles costing over £5. The Asda Extra Special range provides some excellent flavours for money. Try Trentino Pinot Grigio, normally £6.50 for refreshing, ripe pear and crisp apple flavours. The offer ends on Monday.
