The Green Inn, Rawcliffe

FOR reasons that escape me, I was discussing the delights of currywurst with my daughter. I’d not had it since the last time I was in Germany (about six years ago) and she’d never even heard of it but very much liked what she googled. Perfectly understandable. What’s not to like about a pile of sausage, curry and chips? If I could find somewhere that does them, I promised her, I’d take her.

As if by magic, mere days later, I bumped into someone who lives in Rawcliffe and she mentioned that the former Crayke Arms (a tired, old man’s pub that closed a few years back) was back open and now called The Green Inn. Always happy to see a new pub (or, even better, an old pub resuscitated), I checked the website and – you’ve guessed it – they offer currywurst. It was clearly some sort of divine intervention, so me and my daughter were soon away to Rawcliffe.

The pub itself is less like a pub and more like a restaurant with rooms. Undeterred, we ordered drinks and two currywurst. Then the sky fell in. They had taken currywurst off the menu because it wasn’t selling. Our trip was in vain.

A couple of minutes later, however, the waitress came back to say she’s spoken to the chef and he would make us some currywurst. How thoughtful of him, I offered. And shortly after two plates of Germany’s national dish arrived, were swiftly devoured and resulted in one very happy daughter. Well done to The Green Inn, I thought.

Until the bill came. Rather than the advertised £7.50 per plate, we were being charged a whopping £13.90 each. No dialogue was to be entered into on this egregious price hike. “That’s how much we’re charging.”

So, if you’re in Rawcliffe, if you’re feeling hungry and if you like pubs-not-pubs, you could do worse than The Green Inn.

Please, though, fully negotiate the price of your food in advance. You may find it increases unexpectedly while you eat.
