Carnegie need to be mentally tough says Redpath

BRYAN REDPATH has admitted his Yorkshire Carnegie side have been “flaky” this season and need to toughen up for the final run-in.

The Championship high-fliers face the always tricky trip to Jersey tonight looking to bounce back from last week’s surprise 4227 home defeat to Cornish Pirates.

That was only their second league loss of the season but Redpath accepts his squad – who have conceded 10 tries in their last two games alone – need to quickly address some problems.

“When we make an error we concede a try,” he said.

“We’re a bit flaky and it’s always been like that for some reason.

“Last weekend we gifted them two intercept tries but mentally we weren’t right.

“We were a little bit sloppy and that’s crept into our game.

“But we’ve only lost two in 16 game so I’m happy with that.

“We’ve got a massive five games coming up now with Jersey then London Irish back-to-back, Doncaster away and Richmond at home so there’s no point throwing the toys out of the pram.

“We take it on board and go again. We know it’ll be a different challenge over in Jersey; the conditions there we have to play smart with the wind and against it.

It’s a different dynamic again with a travel day and then flying back Saturday so we need to be right upstairs and get ready.”

New signing Tom Arscott debuts on the wing in place of Taylor Prell. He is looking to make his mark after recently being sacked by Sale Sharks for allegedly leaking team information.

Redpath said: “We know he’s a quality player and he’s gone through a tough period. He’s lot of points to prove but he’s faced his punishment with the RFU and Sale, accepted it and moved on.”
