Drumming up support for Viking festival

-

DRUMMERS FROM the continent will lead a percussion workshop in York today.

Spanish drummers Troula Group will be at York’s Central Methodist Church, demonstrating how percussion instruments played an important part in the evolution of music across history.

The workshop, a new addition to the 2017 Jorvik Viking Festival programme, is a prelude to Troula Group’s performances during the March to Coppergate this afternoon, and as part of the fiery finale, , tonight.

Paul Whiting, marketing manager of the festival, said: “We’re used to hearing the Viking warriors beat the back of their shields with swords and axes as they prepare for battle, but the people of York will hear the beat of these drums reverberating across the city during the finale performance.”

“These musicians have a fantastic reputation across Europe, so securing them for this year’s Jorvik Viking Festival, alongside musician Einar Selvik, is a real coup, and shows how highly the Festival is regarded not just in this country but internationally.”

The festival is recognised as the largest Viking event of its kind anywhere in Europe.
