Woolly thinking for trail to brighten up Minster gardens

-

A SPLASH of colour is coming to York as a crafting community prepares to ‘yarn-storm’ the Minster gardens.

The knitted nature trail, complete with woollen woven butterflies, pom-pom clouds and raindrops, is the work of local crafters the York Knit Wits.

They have teamed up with the cathedral for the installation, decorating Dean’s Park through June to brighten up the gardens.

“Knitting has seen a huge resurgence across the country,” said organiser Alice Riley as a crafting workshop was held on Saturday.

“We wanted to exhibit that, and we wanted to get the community involved.

“Events like this bring a real splash of colour; the kids love pointing out all the different animals, and creating them as well. It’s just a really nice feature.”

Dozens of knitted pom-poms and crocheted squares were created at Saturday’s event, adding to the group’s displays of wild flowers and fairies, bugs and woodland animals.

The yarn storm – in which handmade woollen items are used to create street art – will go live in June and remain on display for most of the month.

“Everybody really enjoyed it,” said fellow knitter Mibs Bayliss. “We’ve got fairies and flowers and bugs, lots of pompoms. We’d like a very vibrant, colourful, spring-themed display, something to brighten up everyone’s day.”
