Tories attack Corbyn’s credibility to be PM
SENIOR CONSERVATIVES yesterday launched a furious onslaught on Jeremy Corbyn’s credibility as a potential Prime Minister ahead of new research which reveals the Tory lead over Labour has halved after both parties released their manifestos.
Research published today gave Theresa May’s party a lead of nine percentage points with the Conservatives dropping five per cent to 43 per cent in a week while Labour enjoyed a five per cent boost to 34 per cent.
The study added eight per cent of those who responded intend to vote for the Liberal Democrats and four per cent to Ukip, with no change for either from the previous poll. The SNP were down one per cent to three per cent while the Green Party dropped one percentage point to two per cent, with the “other” candidates receiving five per cent.
Boris Johnson was among senior Tories who yesterday launched a renewed attack on Mr Corbyn, warning the Labour leader could not be trusted to lead the Brexit negotiations if he gained power in the General Election on June 8.
As a clutch of opinion polls published yesterday showed the Conservatives’ lead over Labour narrowing, the Foreign Secretary said Labour had no clear position on Britain’s future relationship with the EU.
Mr Johnson said: “We are at a critical phase in the history of this country. We have to get Brexit right. I am genuinely alarmed by the idea that it could be handled in just 11 days after the election by Jeremy Corbyn.”
Today’s research interviewed more than 1,000 UK residents and was conducted by Survation for ITV’s Good Morning Britain.
