Wartime spirit used to promote markets

-

A PROMOTIONAL campaign evoking the spirit of the Second World War is being launched to promote a Yorkshire district’s markets.

Bradford Council is spearheading the online promotional drive to highlight the markets under the Shop for Victory campaign on the internet.

Council officers have linked up with the University of Bradford’s Digital Media Working Academy to design the campaign, which features market traders in its artwork and videos. It uses Ministry of Information-style images with photos of market traders with slogans such as Your Markets Need You, We Can Do It, Deserve Local Food and Shop for Victory.

Simon Couth, the head of the university’s Digital Media Working Academy, said: “We love what the Bradford Markets team are trying to achieve in promoting the traders and what they offer. They want to attract new shoppers into the markets and we hope that this campaign will help them to reach some different audiences.”

The campaign, which launches tomorrow and will highlight the Oastler Shopping Centre and Kirkgate Market in Bradford as well as those in Keighley, Shipley and Bingley, has been welcomed by traders.

Chris Holmes, from Stickey’s Honey, said: “I don’t want to take my products to London necessarily, it’s important for me, I’m a beekeeper in Yorkshire and I’m quite happy to sell all my honey in Yorkshire. There are five million customers within 40 miles of here.”
