Turner Prize’s home is artist’s big inspiration

-

THE TURNER Prize will be announced at a new home – Margate – where the artist the famous award is named after was inspired.

One of the most controversial awards in the arts world, the winner of the prize – named after landscape painter JMW Turner – is revealed at a venue outside London every other year.

For one year, in 2019, it will be presented at Turner Contemporary, a gallery which opened in Margate in 2011.

The artist first came to the seaside town at the age of 11, returned to sketch there at 21 and became a regular visitor to paint the sea and skies. More than 100 of his works, including some of his most famous seascapes, were inspired by the east Kent coast.

The Turner Prize 2017 will be at Ferens Art Gallery in Hull as part of the UK City of Culture celebrations.
