Gove’s wife denies being ‘Lady Macbeth’ figure following email blunder
MICHAEL GOVE’S wife Sarah Vine has denied being powerhungry after an email blunder in which her “thoughts” on the Tory leadership contest were accidentally sent to a member of the public.
The columnist was dubbed Lady Macbeth when it emerged she was demanding her husband play hardball with Boris Johnson before making any promises of support last year.
“Do not concede any ground. Be your stubborn best. Good luck,” she wrote.
Vine has now told magazine: “That’s an example of how absolutely useless I am. I mess things up. I am quite clumsy.”
She added: “My husband’s nickname for me is Mrs Blurt, because I always say the wrong thing to the wrong person.”
Former justice secretary Gove dramatically ditched Mr Johnson to run himself in last year’s Conservative leadership contest to succeed David Cameron.
Vine denied she was powerhungry and said the tumultuous months in politics over Brexit had cemented her marriage.
She added: “A lot of people had a lot at stake, and that was difficult... I’m not interested in the power or the glory... I don’t need a title, it’s not my thing. And it’s the same with Michael, it’s not his thing.”
She said of her marriage: “We would really struggle now if we were ever not together.
“We’ve become very reliant on each other, very tight. I am very nervous now if he’s not around.”
columnist added: “I’ve made a lot of mistakes. I can try and learn from my mistakes. I’ve apologised to everybody unreservedly.
“Some people are fine with it, some people are not. I can’t do anything more.”
