Chester hails ‘massive win’ for Trinity at Wigan
WAKEFIELD coach Chris Chester was understandably a happy man after seeing his side come from behind to beat Wigan and believes they can beat anyone in the competition.
Trinity got off to a terrible start as they trailed 20-0 after 20 minutes, with James Worthington scoring on debut before Lewis Tierney, Liam Marshall and Thomas Leuluai all crossed. The visitors could have folded, but to their credit they refused to lie down and went in 22-20 in front at the break thanks to a hat-trick from Bill Tupou and another try from Mason Caton-Brown.
They never looked back from that moment and scored three more tries – from Danny Kirmond, Anthony England and Jacob Miller – in the second half to record a famous 42-30 victory.
“It was a tough start for us,” said Chester. “The first 20 minutes we couldn’t really control the ball, we were completing at 50 per cent, then after 20 minutes we went 11 sets from 11 and went in at half-time 22-20.
“I thought we were worthy winners.
“It was a top performance from the guys – that Wakefield team 12 months ago would have been done by a cricket score, so I’m really pleased we came back in the game and got a massive result for this club.
“It’s a hard place to come. We have been on the end of some big scores when we’ve played Wigan over the last few years. To come here and get ourselves back in the game and show that character really shows how far we’ve come as a group.
“We are a good side and we can challenge anyone when we are at our best.”
The win takes Wakefield into the top four but Chester is refusing to get carried away and insists the table will take care of itself.
“We’ve come a long way, we are not too bothered about the table at the moment,” he said.
“We just want to make sure that we are competing every week and entertaining every week.
“We competed very well today, we scored some good tries.”
