Talk is cheap, every dog has its day and handbags at 2pm

-

This week we were supposed to be enjoying a stronger, more stable government. Then Thursday happened. By the time this paper goes to print, Theresa May a Prime Minister in denial about just how badly her party had fared at the polls, will be still picking her way through the political fog. We have given up predicting what will happen next, but what we do know is that the first PMQs of the new incumbent will be compulsive viewing. We’ll see you there at midday on Wednesday.

It’s not quite ‘handbags at dawn’. Instead at Christie’s it will be ‘handbags at 2pm’. The auction house, is holding the UK’s first dedicated handbag sale and bidding is likely to be fierce. Among the lots will be a 10-yearold navy blue Hermes Birkin with white gold and diamond clasps, which is expected to sell for £100,000-150,000. Some of the world’s leading handbag collectors include Katie Holmes, Rita Ora, Kelly Brook and Victoria Beckham.

Tomorrow, the E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo) video games convention will open in Los Angeles, showcasing some of the most talked about console games. If you think that’s not something to get worked up about, consider that when was released in 2013, it sold 12m copies and made $800m in its first day and made $1bn in three days.

On Wednesday, it’s the anniversary of the end of the Falklands War. On June 14, 1982 when British forces advanced on Stanley, Argentine troops fled in disarray. At 10.15am, Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher informed the House of Commons the Argentinians had surrendered.

A heroic, life-saving Staffordshire Bull terrier from Dartmouth, Devon, is to be honoured with an ‘Animal George Cross’ by leading vet charity PDSA at a special London ceremony on Wednesday. Diesel, a three-year-old rescue dog, saved his owner Jordan Ash, 25, and his parents Chris and Tina, after fire broke out in the family home in May, 2016.

Model Jodie Kidd will join Special Boat Service Association members to paddle the River Thames through central London. The group, which is supported by Help for Heroes, will recreate a training paddle made by Royal Marine commandos, the ‘Cockleshell Heroes,’ preparing for Operation Frankton 75 years ago. They will paddle in military canoes from Lambeth Pier to the Tower of London.

Friday marks the first anniversary of the death of former Batley & Spen Labour MP Jo Cox, who died after being attacked in Birstall. A fun run

will take place at Oakwell Hall Country Park on Sunday June 25, with comedian Eddie Izzard rumoured to be taking part. There will be a 2.5km family fun run and 6.5km cross country run, all raising money for charity.

Saturday will see the publication of the Queen’s Birthday Honours list. There will be a Trooping of the Colour at 10am. As if that wasn’t enough, veteran rocker Phil Collins will come out of retirement to play the first of five gigs at the Royal Albert Hall, as part of his tour.

And finally, something to celebrate. Mobile roaming charges end within the EU on Friday. It means it will be cheaper to send texts, talk and use data on your phone while you are abroad.
