Scholarship that changes lives

-

LIAM KNIGHTS was able to follow his dream thanks to a scholarship scheme at the University of Leeds, which is aimed at levelling the playing field so young people from a range of disadvantaged backgrounds can attend.

They may come from a school in a deprived area that has little track record of university entry, or the financial commitment may be too much. Or it may be that they have spent time in care. With the support of alumni and other donors, the university is keen to help break down barriers.

Mr Knights said: “It’s not just financial benefits. I got a private scholarship from a donor. Someone picked me to give money to. That gives me the motivation and confidence I need as this person must believe in me in some way and that’s a powerful thing.”
