Three more schools prepare for ‘discussions’ over finance
NUMEROUS CONSULTATIONS have been held across North Yorkshire in recent months, as four small schools are earmarked for closure and parents at two more prepare to hear their fate.
As well as Horton-in Ribblesdale, Ingleby Arncliffe and Swainby and Potto, decisions were taken earlier this year to close Drax Primary near Selby and Skipton Ings, while parents at Rathmell Primary near Settle were told the news on Monday their school is to close at the end of the academic year.
Now, after concerns were raised by parents over the finances of three more schools in the Upper Dales, it emerges the trio – Bainbridge, Askrigg and West Burton -– are to face an informal discussions over their future and finances this autumn.
“The governing board, headteacher, local authority and Diocese continue to work closely together in order to address the concerning financial position,” a spokesman for North Yorkshire County Council confirmed.
“It has been agreed that in the autumn term there will be a sharing of information with the communities of all three schools and an informal consultation to seek views on the way forward for the federated schools.”
County Coun John Blackie, who was asked to attend a public meeting this week by parents at West Burton Primary, says all the small schools in the area should be retained.
“The parents now can come up with ways to address these challenges,” he said. “If we don’t overcome these challenges, the school may be listed for closure.
“What they would like to do is ensure there’s still that geographical choice and keep all three schools.
“There’s a lack of young families in the Dales. And without young families, the future is very bleak indeed.
“Once the schools go, the services go, and we will witness the collapse of communities right before our very eyes.
“We will end up with nothing more than a gentrified retirement home.”
