Shopping street to get digital support

-

PLANS TO bring a Yorkshire town’s high street into the digital age and launch a major marketing drive to boost trade for businesses could be introduced by the end of the year.

Town councillors in Morley have met with officers at Leeds City Council to discuss the next steps in setting up the wi-fi network. They have been exploring where technical equipment to support the scheme could be installed.

Morley Town Council leader Robert Finnigan said: “We need to get the legal process concluded which will enable us to deliver this scheme and support a vibrant digital town centre. I am optimistic we can get the scheme up and running across Morley town centre before the end of the year.”

The project, backed by the town council, will promote shops, restaurants and businesses and publicise events and festivals.

Town centre manager Rachael Kennedy said: “One of the things I hear over and over again is that businesses are struggling and don’t have the budget for marketing. Through this wi-fi scheme, we want to create a digital marketplace to promote them, help them and showcase what is on offer in Morley.”

The scheme, which is due to include Queen Street and the surrounding area, could also pave the way for a new on-the-go clickand-collect service, meaning shoppers could purchase items online before picking up the goods from stores.
