Coastal towns on alert for high-tide flooding
COASTAL COMMUNITIES in Yorkshire have been urged to prepare for potential flooding ahead of this morning’s high tide.
A number of flood warnings and alerts were issued yesterday, prompted by predictions of waves ‘overtopping’.
Two locations are the subject of warnings, which mean flooding is expected and people should take immediate action.
The first applies to the area around the Spa Complex in Scarborough from 8.30am until 9.15am, with the second in place for Harbour Road and Floral Pavilion in Bridlington between 8.45am and 10am.
Flood alerts are also in place for the North Sea Coast at Bridlington and at Withernsea, Easington and Kilnsea for the morning high tide. The expectation in these places is that wind and wave action could cause localised flooding.
Two further alerts are in place for the coast between Whitby and Filey, covering the morning and evening high tides.
East Riding councillors recommended in April that there should be a review of sea defences in towns worst affected by a tidal surge in January.
Some streets in Hornsea were evacuated and a car became trapped in floodwaters on January 13.
The earth defence was damaged at Tunstall, while Withernsea and Kilnsea were affected by overtopping.
