Plans submitted for landmark city flats

-

PLANS HAVE been revealed for a seven-storey city centre apartment block on the site of Hull’s former register offices.

JRL Homes has submitted a planning application to Hull Council for a “striking” new building on Trippett Street, overlooking Freetown Way.

The site was once home to Hull Register Office from 1942 to 2007 and which was demolished in 2012.

The area, which is bounded by Carroll Place, Little Mason Street, Trippett Street and George Street, was cleared and is now a car park.

Agents for the developer say the design is inspired by the city’s maritime history, with vitreous enamelled cladding and square “porthole” windows on all sides.

The tiered building, designed to resemble “a liner decking (sic)” in the city, would consist of 53 one-bedroom and 14 two-bedroom apartments.

Most of the flats would have their own outside space, as the building would be tiered, allowing the roofs of apartments below to be used as decks and balconies.

The sixth floor would have two flats and two-bedroom penthouse units with private decks. There would be parking for 35 cars on the ground floor.

Documents on the council’s planning portal say councillors “welcomed” the application at a pre-planning presentation and “found it acceptable”.

The building is in the Charterhouse conservation area and close to the grade II-listed Master’s House at Hull Charterhouse.

The three-storey business and science centre for Hull College is to the west, the two-storey Napoleon’s casino to the east and the five-storey ECHG hostel to the north.
