Terror attack first aid courses are launched to teach people to become ‘prepared, not scared’

-

A NEW first aid course teaching people how to react in the event of a terror attack has been launched in the North.

The CitizenAID Terrorism First Aid Course, now available in Leeds, features tips on how to deal with unexploded bombs, prioritise casualties and stop severe bleeding.

It is being unveiled this month in a bid to help people become “prepared, not scared”.

The launch follows the latest European terror attack in Barcelona, in which a van drove into crowds along the busy Las Ramblas avenue, killing 13 and injuring more than 100 other people. It is the most recent of a wave of attacks that have also targeted Britain this year, including the Manchester Arena bombing in May when 22 people were killed.

Bosses at First on Scene Training, which is organising the paidfor courses, said their training helped one woman improvise during the attack in Manchester.

Jon Matley, director at First on Scene Training, said: “After one of our learners saved her own life by using a handbag strap as an improvised tourniquet during the Manchester Bombing, we have been particularly keen to promote CitizenAID here in Yorkshire and train members of the public in vital community resilience first aid skills.”

The CitizenAID courses were developed by Qualsafe Awards alongside senior British medical and military professionals.

Participants will undergo a series of scenario training exercises to teach them how to help each other when emergency services.

Scenarios include actions in the event of a shooting or knife attack, communicating with emergency services and managing unresponsive casualties.

The three-hour courses, which cost £35, are now available in Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham and Leicester.
