Contractor announced for £9m Guildhall revamp
WORK TO transform York’s historic Guildhall into a “worldclass” venue and business centre is set to begin in January after the city council announced it had appointed a contractor to carry out the £9m project.
Interserve won the highly competitive tendering process after demonstrating it has the expertise to deliver a high-quality remodelling of the Grade 1 and Grade II-listed building complex.
The construction company has worked on other major historical building restorations, including Kirkgate Market, in Leeds, and Durham Castle.
The city council’s Executive approved plans to revamp the Guildhall in March. The redevelopment will make the most of the listed buildings, allowing riverside access to the complex which will host public and civic events, a restaurant and a state-of-the-art business centre.
Coun David Carr, leader of York Council, said: “We’re delighted to appoint a contractor to move this exciting project forward. This remodelling will make sure that this historic building plays an important role in York’s future. It will retain Guildhall’s traditional public and civic functions while providing a world-class business venue in the heart of York. This is a creative way to protect and renew Guildhall while giving more people better access to its stunning features.”
John Gittins, Interserve divisional director, said the firm would attempt to minimise disruption and release updates on progress.
He said: “Interserve will also develop a bespoke community investment plan to maximise local supply chain involvement and generate as many employment and training opportunities as possible.”
During the construction period Full Council meetings will be hosted at The Citadel, owned by York City Church.
