Police appeal after two children die and mother hurt in M62 crash

-

TWO CHILDREN have died following a motorway crash in which their mother was seriously injured.

A two-month-old baby boy and a 19-month-old girl, who have not been named, were taken to hospital after the collision on the M62 near Eggborough in North Yorkshire at around 3.30pm on Sunday.

North Yorkshire Police said the children died on Monday despite extensive efforts to save them.

A force spokesman said their mother, in her 20s and was a passenger in the car, was also taken to hospital, where she remains in a serious condition.

The children’s father, also in his 20s, who is thought to have been driving the Honda Jazz, was treated for minor injuries, the spokesman said.

Traffic Sergeant Hamish Halloway, who attended the incident, said: “I’d like to extend my deepest sympathies to the family involved following this tragic incident.

“Any fatal collision is deeply upsetting for the families involved but it’s impossible to imagine the horrific ordeal this family is currently going through. I’d like to thank the members of the public who stopped to help, in particular the driver of a white HGV who was not involved in the collision but gave a massive amount of assistance to the family at the scene.”

The spokesman said all three emergency services, including officers from three police forces and the air ambulance attended the scene, which is close to where the A19 meets the motorway.

He said officers are investigating. They want to talk to anyone who witnessed the crash or has dashcam footage. The family is from West Yorkshire.
