Debate on possible closure of care homes
TWO YORK care homes could close under plans to be discussed by councillors next week.
Councillors will be asked to begin consultations on the future of Windsor House and Morrell House with options including closure.
One of the consultations will be held before Christmas and the other in the first half of next year.
Councillors would need to formally approve any move to close either home.
The consultations are the latest phase of a major change in the way elderly people are cared for in York.
Members of York council’s executive will be told of the progress made in closing old accommodation and the provision of new facilities.
Coun Carol Runciman, executive member for health and adult social care, said: “This report looks to highlight the significant progress being made to improve the accommodation available to our older people.
“It is pleasing to see such positive progress being made with both private and public sector investment to help meet the needs of our ageing population and we are committed to continuing this work for the benefit of current and future generations.”
Councillors will be told that construction is almost complete on a £4m extension at Glen Lodge for older people with dementia.
A planning application has also been submitted for an 80 bed residential home on the development known as the Burnholme Health and Well-being Campus.
A 105-bed home and 44-bed care home development in New Earswick will also be built.
