Warning as county is braced for strong winds sweeping across UK

-

WEATHER WARNINGS are in place across the country as Yorkshire is braced for strong winds.

Winds of more than 60mph were forecast to reach parts of England and Wales overnight into today.

The Met Office yesterday issued a yellow weather warning as it predicted that westerly winds will lead to gusts of 40mph to 50mph for 12 hours up until 9am this morning.

An area of low pressure, crossing the north of the country, will bring the swathe of strong winds on its southern flanks which could affect parts of Yorkshire, the Midlands, Mid Wales and North Wales.

The blustery weather is also expected to hit North West England, as well as parts of East Anglia.

Rain will also be heavy at times, especially over North West England and North Wales, the forecasters said.

A yellow warning is an indication of severe weather, put out by the Met Office, which could lead to travel delays and disruption of day-to-day activities.

A Met Office spokesman said: “Whilst this weather is not unusual for the time of year, it brings the potential for disruption to transport, tree damage and temporary power cuts.”

Earlier this week, bookmakers slashed odds on this year being the wettest October on record as the month began with heavy rain and gale-force winds.
